American Veteran 04

Dr. Armen C. Haig MD

March 9, 1932 ~ August 2, 2022 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Tribute

Armen Charles Haig, M.D. departed this life on August 2, 2022 at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut.  He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years, Johanna Ruzzier Haig, M.D. (August 14, 2015).

Armen was born on March 9, 1932 in New York City and was raised in a loving Christian family.  He attended Stuyvesant High School In New York City and went on to attend Columbia College in Manhattan.  Armen fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a surgeon by earning  his medical degree in 1956 from Yale School of Medicine.  Dr. Haig received his general surgical training at Duke University, then he returned to Yale for his orthopedic surgical residency.   Dr. Haig served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force on active duty for two years and remained in the Air Force Reserve an additional eight years.  For over 50 years,  Dr. Haig practiced as an orthopedic surgeon in Westchester County, New York;  he served two terms as Chief of Orthopedics followed by two terms as Chief of Staff at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, New York.  He also served as an assistant clinical professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian in NYC.  Dr. Haig’s medical career demonstrated a complete dedication to, and great enjoyment of his profession, his entire hospital staff and his patients — often spending holidays (Christmas day included) at the hospital visiting patients even when he was not on call.  Despite his academic and professional achievements, he was a humble man who earnestly cared for and appreciated people from all walks of life.  He took every opportunity to spiritually and intellectually enrich those around him, including his children, friends and acquaintances. Dr. Haig and his wife, Johanna, who herself was an Anesthesiologist, raised five children.  He had a genuine appreciation of music and film and was a voracious reader, always wanting to share newly gained knowledge, insights and understanding with his family and friends.  Described by many as  “larger than life,” Armen was always the star and “master of ceremonies” at family gatherings where his upbeat and commanding presence brought encouragement, happiness and side-splitting laughter (along with some cigar smoke) to those around him.  He was a sincere Christian whose faith was evidenced by his actions and concern for others. Dr. Haig was a generous man who instinctively and quietly cared for, supported and embraced those God put in his path.  His love for and enjoyment of his children was so strong that they genuinely preferred to spend time together as a family rather than go in their own directions with friends.  Armen understood and received the grace of God, and he is now with his heavenly Father — and reunited forever with his wife, mother, father, two grandchildren and countless departed relatives and friends.   Armen is survived by his five children, 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

His life exemplified faithfulness to the Biblical prescription, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2: 3-4
