It was such a shock seeing RIP next to Derek's name on FB. Confusion swiftly followed as I sought answers being so far away in the Philippines. Derek, from the moment you met my son, Kalman, in Cheshire .. as two giddy schoolboys, you shared adventures and confidences and I knew that this was a special bond that would last a lifetime. Thank you to your parents for bringing you into this world and being true witnesses to that brotherly love that you had with Kalman. I cry for your parents and also knowing that my son is all torn up having lost a great friend. You will always live in my heart .. from Kalman's mom.

Mr. and Mrs. Meyers,
Derek, was an unforgettable presence. No matter the situation, he embraced it with a fervor for life that was infectious. We shared summer days on Block Island fishing and diving, and many a night at the end of the dock - catching squid under the spreader lights and turning them into fried calamari as quickly as we could get the oil hot. They were good times spent with great people, and I will cherish them always.
Please know that his friends miss him greatly, and that our lives are immeasurably better because of the time that we got to spend with him and with you. "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die."
My deepest condolences,
Alex

Bill and Laurie,
Our hearts are breaking thinking about Derek's passing. We can't imagine what it's like to wake up knowing you can't hug him or hear his laugh again. They tell us to celebrate his life but right now we know that must seem difficult. We are thinking about you guys! May Derek find peace and may you find the days to remember your wonderful lives together. Our deepest condolences, Amy and Ernie.

. When a man loses a wife he is called a widower. When a woman loses a husband she is called a widow. There is no term for losing a child because in a perfect world this does not happen. We all know that this is not a perfect world but Derek made this world better. He will be missed. May he rest in peace . We pray that you will find peace in knowing that Derek will always be with you in spirit and that someday you will be united.
