Katherine Metzger

Katherine Elizabeth Metzger, age 51, of Milford, CT, peacefully lost her courageous two year battle with colon cancer surrounded by her family and beloved fur babies, Mr. Wiffles, Mr. Sniffles, Jo-Jo and Twinkie. She was the best cat mom ever.

She was born on September 30, 1969, in Bridgeport, CT. She was the daughter of Robert Metzger (Cathy) and Deborah Mantiglia (Joseph) and sister of Robert Metzger, Jr. and Anthony Mantiglia. She also leaves several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Kathy graduated from Jonathan Law High School in 1987 and went on to UCONN and graduated in 1993 with a Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. From there, she was hired by the Stratford School System where she worked for 28 years. In her recent years until her passing, she taught at Bunnell High School. Her dedication and professionalism knew no bounds. Kathy was known as the “gold standard” among her colleagues. She worked tirelessly for her students, following their unique struggles and victories, and understood the goals, hopes and dreams they had for themselves. Kathy helped her students to clearly articulate and express themselves so that they could have a true voice in this world. She didn’t just work with her students, Kathy smiled with them, laughed with them, and loved them. Many of them were fortunate enough to continue their relationship with Kathy as young adults attending the STRIVE program.

Kathy was also a Coach for the Bunnell/Stratford High Unified Sports for fifteen years, with her colleagues Gerry Mucci and Diane DeStefano, providing a wonderful outlet for students to compete with other schools with their peer tutors. Kathy also coached Stratford High and Bunnell High girl’s powder puff football.

Growing up, Kathy was involved in Brownies, ballet and tap dancing. She was a pitcher for a girls’ softball team and a member of the Bridgeport Junior Rifle Club, coached by her grandfather, Albert Metzger. Kathy went on to become a champion shooter and made the All-State Team.

Katherine was a wonderful daughter, a gifted speech pathologist, respected friend and colleague. When you think of Kathy, remember her infectious laugh, her beautiful face, her smile, her love of life and good times in Bermuda and Disney.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Monday, June 7, 2021 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, CT. A Memorial Service will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
