Tribute

William C. (Bill) Hummel, 92, of Orange, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on March 26, 2021. He was the beloved husband of Mary L. Hummel for 62 years. Bill was born in New Haven on January 22, 1929, he was the son of William and Lena (Roth) Hummel. He is survived by his three children, William Hummel of Easton, John Hummel of Orange and Mary Ellen McMahon (Kevin) of Fairfield. He is also survived by his two loving grandchildren, Lydia Hummel and Liam McMahon.

Bill graduated from Hamden High School and Quinnipiac University before entering the family business, Hummel Bros., Inc. as the Wurstmacher (Sausage Maker). He left the business briefly to serve his country in the Korean War. He returned to Hummel Bros., where he was President and CEO and worked until his retirement at the age of 83. Hummel Bros., was his passion and life’s work. He often worked long hours side by side with his coworkers who he thought of as not only employees but friends.

Bill was a true gentleman, he had a kind disposition and an unwavering work ethic. He was meticulous and dedicated, whether it was yard work, finishing the family basement, or building a stone wall in the woods you would always find him working with his hands, a ruler and level until whatever he was working on was absolutely perfect. Bill loved music, particularly Polka music which as fate would have it led him to Long Island as a young man where he met the love of his life, Mary, at a Polka Dance in Port Washington, NY. Whether it was Port Washington, Riverhead or Warsaw Park, as a young couple you could often find Bill and Mary on a Saturday Night on the dance floor doing the Polka. Bill loved spending time with his family, sitting out by the pool on warm summer days and watching his New York Giants on Sunday afternoons.

The family would like to thank the caregivers who took such amazing care of him during his brief illness. We will never forget the kindness and selfless care you gave him.
